The Mondrian Dress pattern hack: from tweaking the pattern to cutting out the fabric – Adaptação do Vestido Mondrian: dos ajustes no molde ao corte do tecido

EN Summary: During last weekend I was able to do some progress on the dress, adapting V9048 to better mimic the original YSL dress. I didn’t follow the pattern instructions for the hacking the pattern; I manipulated V9048 differently to obtain a better approximation of the original. Keep on reading to know all about it!

EN: The line drawing shows the stylelines of the V9048; as you can see the pattern includes an optional collar and sleeves, which I won’t be using; it also has a front and a back yoke and a wide hem band. Without getting into much detail, the instructions will have you re-use the front yoke pattern, not cutting it on the fold; instead they tell you to subtract half the vertical band width at the center front and add seam allowances. The horizontal band is subtracted from the top of the mid-front pattern (again adding the SAs) and the wide hem band is completely eliminated by overlapping it to the mid-section along the stitching lines; the narrow hem band is deduced from the hem of the dress and half the vertical band width is subtracted along the center front (adding SAs). The vertical band runs from the neckline to the narrow hem band; both horizontal bands are cut on the fold. The back o the dress is obtained by overlapping the back yoke, back mid-section and back wide hem band along the stitching lines and subtracting the narrow hem band which is the same as on the front of the dress. There’s nothing wrong with this and you’ll get the dress shown on the pattern hack envelope (not the original V1557 dress). You’ll get slightly shorter yoke panels, a chest dart and no vertical band on the back. Other than that V9048 is the perfect pattern for the hack: it has almost no waist shaping (the original dress has no waist shaping, it resembles a tunic of sorts) but might not be as lose fitting (which is fine by me). The total length of the V9048 also looks good in proportion to the YSL dress. With all this in mind I decided to use V9048 as the base pattern and not drafting it from scratch.

EN: First I had to decide on where to place the horizontal band regardless of the yoke on V9048. A close examination of the vintage photos show that the band actually crosses the bottom of the armhole (see the post's top photo). Through Paco (who owns an original V1557 pattern) I was able to find out that the band's width is around 1"1/2 so I started by tracing the band on the front.. A closer examination of the V9048 shows that the front yoke has some degree of shaping to achieve a better fit around the armhole, and I could see that by aligning the yoke's stitching lines. I wanted to keep the tight armhole shaping so I moved the shaping down to meet the horizontal band I've just drawn. I get a new yoke, longer than the pattern's and I also get to keep the shaping on the armhole. Next I rotated the chest dart by slashing along the bottom band line and folding the V9048 chest dart. You need to know basic pattern drafting to pull this out and to make sure it would work I "tissue" tested the fit of the front as you can see in the next photo:

EN: In comparison the back is quite simple to alter: the slight yoke shaping is equivalent to a horizontal dart that can be rotated to the shoulder, exactly as the original YSL dress shows.
---
EN: I've drawn all pattern pieces, added 5/8" seam allowances and notches; I've also drawn separate pattern pieces for the lining, which has no bands or panels, and neckline and armhole facings:
---
EN: Before cutting the fabric I pre-washed it and block fused it with soft fusible interfacing, one that adds structure without stiffening (it's the kind of fusible usually used on knits because it has a little give in it). Block fusing ensures maximum accuracy.
---
EN: And this is all for now; thank you all for reading and stay tuned for more progress reports on this dress!

PT: E por hoje é tudo! Obrigada por aparecerem e fiquem atentos à continuação deste projeto!

Our Atlanta Sewing Guild newsletter editor often finds herself despairing over blank white space in our monthly newsletter, and I suggested I would reach out to a few bloggers to see if they would object to our reproducing their tricks of the trade (so to speak) for the benefit of our members. We would, of course, give full attribution. You have such great articles and I am sure our members would enjoy reading them.
You can reply to mellincf (at) gmail dot com, and thanks!
