EN Summary: I'm starting a series of posts called The Serger files dedicated to the setup of the different stitches on my serger (the Singer Quantunlock 14T957DC); I'll try to post about the different stitches as I use them in a context. Today's post is dedicated to the 3-thread Ultra-Stretch Mock Safety Stitch, ideally used for seaming knits with a good degree of stretch, like in beachwear and athletic-wear.

EN: I've own this 5-thread serger for about ten years, after owning a previous version of the 4-thread Singer overlock. When this machine came out it was top of its game with all the stitches you could imagine, adding also the coverstitch functions, so replaced my old Singer Overlock with this one. This machine is considerably more difficult to thread and set-up than my previous one, so I was naturally intimidated and overwhelmed when I got it. I used the covertitch stitches on a couple of projects but I started to feel thrown away by the time and effort involved in turning the machine back and forth from overlock to covertitch; I also found that some times I would find skipped stitches with the coverstitching and that really annoyed me (and all those reviews saying that a mixed machine would never behave as well as a dedicated machine really start getting into my head). With time I ended up just using it with the regular 3-thread overlock to finish up seams, and it performed really well at that job, leaving the coverstitching to my sewing machine's twin needle instead. A few weeks ago I started to research more about sergers and coverlock machines (I couldn't believe that now you actually have self-threading machines with automatic tension control like this one! How cool is that?!), and decided to put my own into a test run. I felt very disappointed by the poor quality of the coverstitching it produced (even worse than I remembered) and I also noticed the differential feed dial was stuck. Time for taking it to get serviced, I thought, and while the local Singer dealer had it for repair I started researching for a dedicated coverstitch machine, which I bought (click here) and so far I'm quite happy with. When I went to pick up me 5-thread serger, I was informed that its timing was off and after some tuning and inside cleaning the machine was 100% operational. All-right! So I stocked up on overlocking special purpose needles and came up with my mind set on rediscovering my serger's potential. And what a better way than to use it than on my current project, McCalls7406 made up from a sheer stable lycra knit?

EN: The 3-thread Ultra-Stretch Moch Safety stitch uses three threads: two on the over-edge needles left and right (Orange and Blue dials) and one on the lower looper (red dial). I used the tensions referred in the Machine manual and they produced very good results, at least with this fabric.

Left over-edge needle (Orange): 8.5
Right over-edge needle (Blue): 4
Lower looper (Red): 3

Also note that the threads should be threaded in a specific order: Red, Blue, Orange (Lower looper, Right over-edge needle, Left over-edge needle). This machine has 5 needle slots (two over-edging and three for coverstitch/chain-stitch).
---

EN: The manual is sometimes confusing regarding this matter, and I think it's better to understand the whys of the thread paths rather than referring to the manual each time I have to re-thread the machine. This machine has two take-up levers for the needle-threads; the important thing to remember is that the upper take-up lever is only used when threading a chain-stitch needle (ex: for a real safety stitch instead of a mock-up one; in this case, one of the coverstitch needles is used for the chainstitch). So for both needle threads with the 3-thread Ultra-Stretch Mock Safety Stitch, the lower take-up lever is used:
---
EN: There are thread guides with slots along the thread path and which slot to use is intuitive, just minding the needle position. Yet there is a thread bar guide located at the bottom of the needle clamp (the one with no slots, located just below the needle screws); when using the over-edge needles (note their slots are behind the three coverstitch needle slots), the threads should go BEHIND the bottom thread bar guide (for any of the coverstitch needles (their slots are located more to the front of the needle clamp), the threads should go on front of the thread bar guide instead).
---

EN:
Foot Pressure: 2 less pressure for this sheer fabric (located on the machine head)
Differential feed: N (dial is located at far back)
Cutting with: N (dial is located at bottom front)
Stitch length: N (not seen, located at the right side of the machine below the turning wheel)
---
PT:

EN: Some machines need a change of the needle plate each time there is the need to use a covesrtitch, a chainstitch or a rolled hem stitch; this Singer model doesn't, the stitch finger is set in place or retracted by adjusting the little lever on the right of the needle. For the 3-thread ultra-stretch mock safety stitch the stitch finger lever should be on the N position.
---

Spreader - Distribuidor

EN: When the upper looper is not threaded, it should be either disengaged or converted into a spreader by lifting the indicated lever which inserts the spreader into the thread hole of the upper looper. The 3-thread Ultra-Stretch Mock safety stitches use the spreader.
---

EN: The upper-looper is converted into a spreader (so it should move along with the stitching): the upper looper clutch should be disengaged (to the left and down position). Refer to the user's manual on how to set the clutch properly, because the looper must stand in a specific position when you do so.
---

A few extra advice when stitching with the serger - Conselhos extra para coser na corta-e-cose

EN: Check the needles (use proper needle for your machine; change needle if something doesn't seem right; check if needle is correctly inserted and in the right slot; all the needle screws should be screwed all the way in tight even on empty slots, otherwise they can accidentally unscrew and fall into the machine); after threading the machines turn the wheel by hand three or four times while pulling the threads gently to the back of the presser foot to allow the stitches to wrap around the stitch finger; then lower the presser foot, continue holding the thread while pressing on the foot controller, until the chain is about 2 to 3 inches. The presser foot remains down for stitching; to start stitching simply lift its point and place the fabric underneath and far enough for the feed dogs start pulling (DO NOT DO THIS FOR COVERSTITCHING; it's an entirely different game). Using different color threads allows to determine if there's the need of tension adjustment and to identify which thread(s) need adjusting. In the end change the threads using the knotting method.
---
